OS Sahara specimineFollowing training at the National History Department of the British Museum, 0. W. N. Shepard completed collections for them as follows:

  • In the sand dunes 20 km north of El Golea in Algeria specimens of skink or sand lizard were trapped and preserved. These proved useful in establishing the location of sub-genus of skink some 100 miles further south than previously thought to exist.
  • In the savannah region of Goundam in Mali specimens of fruit bat were trapped and preserved to complete gaps in the Museum’s collection.
  • In the rain forest zone of the Bandama Rouge river in the Ivory Coast, specimens of bilharzia-bearing water snails were collected and preserved for research under Dr. C. W. Wright.

Note: Lists of bird sightings during the journey included 141 recognized species.
